I was not ready for the heat Darren Sugiyama was going to bring on this weeks episode!
Darren is a self-made business man with best-selling books, multi-million dollar companies and is one of the premiere keynote speakers in the country. He is efficient, productive and is super intentional with every move he makes…and it turns out he has a great story that I never would have expected!
I was nervous because it never rains in Southern California but the day I was booked to meet with Darren it dumping buckets outside. I’m talking that Ketchikan, Alaska type rain!
Thankfully, we were still able to get the job done.
One big lesson I took away from Darren is something that I’ve struggled with a lot during my adult life: Enjoying the journey.
As we talked and I learned more about his story, it became abundantly clear that RIGHT NOW is the good times. Often, I compare myself to other people and I feel like I haven’t ‘made it’ but what I came to realize is that nobody really ever ‘makes it’. There is always someone further up the pecking order who has it going on more than you do. I left our conversation feeling inspired and happy and I learned a ton in the process.
On a sidetone, I am also finished with Darren’s book ‘The Icon’ which is AMAZING. Definitely worth a read.
You guys are going to love Darren and his underdog story!

Embracing the Mindset of Lifelong Learning
One of the most valuable pieces of advice CEOs can offer teenagers is the importance of adopting a mindset geared towards lifelong learning.
The Importance of Continuous Education and Self-Improvement
In today’s fast-paced and ever-changing world, continuous learning is not just beneficial; it’s essential. CEOs often stress the importance of never becoming complacent in one’s knowledge and skills. Whether it’s pursuing formal education, seeking out professional development opportunities, or engaging in self-directed learning, the pursuit of knowledge is a lifelong journey. This constant drive for self-improvement prepares individuals to adapt to new challenges and seize opportunities throughout their lives.
Learning from Successes and Failures
Another key aspect of lifelong learning is the ability to learn from both successes and failures. CEOs often share that their failures were just as important as their successes in shaping their paths. Teenagers should be encouraged to view failures not as setbacks but as valuable learning experiences. Similarly, analyzing and understanding what led to successes can provide insights for future endeavors.
Staying Curious and Open to New Experiences
Curiosity is the fuel for lifelong learning. CEOs often attribute their success to a natural curiosity and openness to new experiences. Encouraging teenagers to explore diverse interests, ask questions, and be open to new ideas and perspectives can ignite a passion for discovery and learning. This curiosity can lead to innovation, creativity, and personal growth.
In conclusion, embracing a mindset of lifelong learning is foundational for success and personal development. Continuous education, learning from both successes and failures, and maintaining curiosity are crucial for navigating the complexities of modern life and careers.
Understanding the Value of Hard Work and Perseverance
Successful CEOs often attribute their achievements to hard work and perseverance, underscoring these virtues as essential for teenagers aspiring to succeed.
The Role of Dedication in Achieving Goals
Dedication is the cornerstone of success in any field. CEOs emphasize the significance of committing to one’s goals with determination and persistence. They advocate for setting clear objectives and dedicating oneself tirelessly to achieving them. This level of dedication involves discipline, a structured approach, and the willingness to put in the necessary effort over time. It’s about understanding that success is rarely instantaneous and often requires sustained hard work.
Overcoming Obstacles and Setbacks
Obstacles and setbacks are inevitable in any journey towards success. CEOs often share stories of their own challenges and how perseverance played a key role in overcoming them. They teach that resilience – the ability to bounce back from failures and setbacks – is a critical skill. Teenagers should learn to view challenges as opportunities for growth and learning, rather than insurmountable barriers.
The Journey is as Important as the Destination
Another important lesson is to value the journey itself, not just the destination. CEOs often reflect on how their experiences, both good and bad, have shaped their character and equipped them with invaluable skills and knowledge. Emphasizing this perspective can help teenagers appreciate their experiences and growth, regardless of the immediate outcomes, fostering a more fulfilling and balanced approach to their goals and ambitions.
In conclusion, understanding the value of hard work and perseverance is crucial for teenagers. By embracing dedication, resilience in the face of challenges, and valuing the journey itself, they can build a strong foundation for success in their future endeavors.

Leading by Example and Influence
One of the key aspects of leadership is the ability to lead by example. CEOs emphasize the importance of integrity, responsibility, and setting a high standard for oneself. They encourage teenagers to be role models in their own right, influencing others through their actions and decisions. Leadership is also about inspiring and motivating those around you, which requires empathy, communication skills, and the ability to understand and work with diverse perspectives.
Building and Nurturing Effective Teams
Teamwork is another crucial aspect of success. CEOs highlight the importance of being able to work effectively with others, recognizing the strengths of team members, and bringing out the best in each person. This involves developing skills like active listening, conflict resolution, and collaborative problem-solving. Building and nurturing a team also means creating an environment where everyone feels valued and empowered to contribute.
The Power of Collaboration and Delegation
Effective leaders understand the power of collaboration and the importance of delegation. They know that they cannot do everything alone and that delegating tasks can lead to more efficient and successful outcomes. CEOs advise teenagers to learn how to trust others with responsibilities, understand their capabilities, and collaborate to achieve common goals.
In conclusion, cultivating strong leadership and teamwork skills is vital for teenagers. These skills, which include leading by example, working effectively in teams, and understanding the importance of collaboration and delegation, are essential for personal and professional development.
The Significance of Ethics and Integrity in Business
A common thread in the advice from successful CEOs is the paramount importance of ethics and integrity in business and personal life.
Maintaining Honesty and Transparency
CEOs often stress the importance of honesty and transparency in all dealings. This principle is not just about avoiding deceit; it’s about being open in communication and clear in intentions. They encourage teenagers to uphold these values, explaining that honesty builds trust, an essential component of any successful relationship, whether personal or professional.
Making Ethical Decisions
In the world of business, and indeed in life, individuals are often faced with decisions that test their ethical boundaries. CEOs highlight the importance of making decisions that not only benefit oneself or the organization but also consider the wider impact on society and the environment. They suggest that teenagers develop a strong moral compass, which will guide them in making choices that are not only profitable but also ethical and just.
Building Trust and Reputation
A solid reputation based on trust and integrity is invaluable. CEOs advise that this reputation is built over time through consistent ethical behavior. They emphasize to teenagers that their reputation, once established, precedes them in every room and situation and can be one of their most significant assets or liabilities. Maintaining integrity is key to building a personal and professional identity that others respect and trust.
In conclusion, the significance of ethics and integrity in business and personal life cannot be overstated. These values are foundational to building trust, making sound decisions, and establishing a reputable and respected presence in any field.
Encouraging Innovation and Entrepreneurial Spirit
Business leaders often emphasize the importance of nurturing an innovative and entrepreneurial mindset, crucial for success in the modern economy.
Fostering Creativity and Out-of-the-Box Thinking
Innovation starts with creativity and the ability to think outside traditional boundaries. CEOs encourage teenagers to cultivate their creative thinking skills, as this can lead to unique solutions and new opportunities. Encouraging curiosity, exploration, and a willingness to question conventional wisdom can help foster an innovative mindset. This creative thinking is not confined to business alone but can be applied to problem-solving in various aspects of life.
Taking Calculated Risks
Entrepreneurship often involves taking risks. However, successful business leaders advocate for calculated risk-taking – where the potential benefits and drawbacks are carefully weighed. They advise teenagers to learn how to assess situations, consider potential outcomes, and make bold decisions when warranted. This skill involves a balance of courage and prudence and is essential for anyone looking to forge new paths or start entrepreneurial ventures.
Adapting to Changing Markets and Technologies
In a rapidly evolving world, adaptability is key. CEOs underscore the importance of staying informed about market trends and technological advancements. They encourage teenagers to be flexible and adaptable, ready to pivot when necessary and embrace new technologies and ideas. This adaptability not only helps in staying relevant but also opens up new avenues for innovation and growth.
In conclusion, encouraging innovation and an entrepreneurial spirit involves fostering creativity, taking calculated risks, and being adaptable to change. These qualities are essential for teenagers as they prepare to enter a world where innovation and entrepreneurship are increasingly valued.
Developing Effective Communication and Networking Skills
Communication and networking are pivotal skills in the business world, and CEOs often stress their importance for personal and professional success.
Mastering Verbal and Non-Verbal Communication
Effective communication goes beyond just the words spoken. It also encompasses non-verbal cues like body language, tone of voice, and facial expressions. CEOs suggest that teenagers practice and refine their communication skills, both verbal and non-verbal, to convey their messages clearly and confidently. This includes being articulate, learning to present ideas effectively, and being aware of the non-verbal signals they send.
The Importance of Active Listening
Active listening is another critical component of effective communication. CEOs emphasize the value of truly listening to understand, rather than just to respond. Active listening involves paying full attention, showing interest, asking clarifying questions, and reflecting on what has been said. This skill is crucial for meaningful interactions, whether in negotiations, team collaborations, or everyday conversations.
Building a Professional Network
Networking is not merely about making contacts; it’s about building meaningful professional relationships. CEOs advise teenagers to start building their network early, be it through internships, mentorships, or industry events. They stress the importance of maintaining these connections, offering value, and being open to learning from others. A strong network can provide support, opportunities, and valuable insights throughout one’s career.
In conclusion, developing effective communication and networking skills is essential for teenagers. Mastering both verbal and non-verbal communication, practicing active listening, and building a professional network are key competencies that will serve them well in their future endeavors.

The Importance of Work-Life Balance
Work-life balance is crucial for maintaining long-term productivity and happiness. CEOs encourage teenagers to understand the importance of balancing their professional ambitions with their personal lives. This involves allocating time for hobbies, family, and rest, alongside career and educational pursuits. Achieving this balance helps prevent burnout and ensures that success is holistic and sustainable.
Managing Stress and Prioritizing Self-care
In the pursuit of professional goals, managing stress effectively and prioritizing self-care are essential. CEOs advise teenagers to develop healthy coping mechanisms for stress, such as physical activity, mindfulness practices, or engaging in leisure activities. They also stress the importance of regular self-care routines, which can include adequate sleep, healthy eating, and taking time to unwind and recharge.
Setting Realistic Expectations and Boundaries
Setting realistic expectations and boundaries is another critical aspect of balancing ambitions with well-being. CEOs recommend that teenagers set achievable goals and understand their limits. It’s important to push oneself to grow and succeed, but not at the cost of mental and physical health. Learning to say no and setting clear boundaries can help maintain this balance and ensure that both professional and personal lives are fulfilling.

Guidance from CEOs often extends to the practical aspects of preparing for the future, particularly in career and financial planning, crucial for a secure and prosperous life.
Understanding the Basics of Personal Finance
Financial literacy is a vital skill often overlooked in traditional education. CEOs emphasize the importance of understanding personal finance basics, such as budgeting, saving, investing, and the responsible use of credit. They advise teenagers to start building their financial knowledge early, as this will empower them to make informed decisions about money, investments, and savings, leading to long-term financial stability.
Career Planning and Goal Setting
Strategic career planning and goal setting are essential for professional success. CEOs recommend that teenagers begin thinking about their career paths early, exploring their interests and strengths, and setting clear, achievable goals. They encourage seeking mentorships, internships, and varied experiences to gain insight into different industries and roles. This proactive approach to career planning can help teenagers align their education and experiences with their professional aspirations.
Embracing Change and Future Trends in the Workforce
The future workforce is expected to undergo continuous change, with evolving technologies and market demands.
